Despite being contracted to the French club Paris St Germain till the end of the season, England midfielder David Beckham has flown to China in order to make his PR commitments. This has drew criticism from French legend Bixente Lizarazu, who has said that the star is being extremely unprofessional. Due to this absence, Beckham was unavailable to train with the team ahead of the match with Barcelona in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. This will be one of the biggest matches of the season for PSG, as they aim to reach the semi-final stage for the first time.
The 37-year-old flew to China during the international break. Even though he has returned to the club just in time for the crucial match against Montpelier in the league, he has been criticised by Lizarazu. The 43-year-old, Lizarazu, represented the French national team on 97 occasions, and he is regarded as one of the best players to have come from France. He has said that going to China for 10 days when his club are preparing to face the biggest match in history of the club is extremely unprofessional.
Lizarazu has said that the club should promote Beckham as a marketing entity rather than as a football player who is going to strengthen the team.
“I’m sorry, but when you go to China to promote football 10 days before the most important game in PSG’s history, then it’s not good preparation, it’s not professional. No other big club would let a so-called player go so far away. In which case don’t sell David Beckham to us as a football player who is coming to strengthen PSG. If he’s sold to us as a marketing product, then that’s great,” said the 43-year-old. Beckham has made four appearances for the team since signing in January.
